Paul MacDonald-Taylor, Eden Court’s Head of Film, introduces our new cinema programme for August.
We start the month with the final few days of both Barbie and Oppenheimer, our two busiest films in years. Thank you so much for coming along in such large numbers to see these films. Barbie will back in the first week in September and the following week we will be screening Oppenheimer on glorious 35mm film. A chance to see these wonderful films for a second time, or to catch up with them for the first time.
Following these blockbusters is the 7th instalment of the greatest action film series (yes, better than Bond) - Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1. There are two things guaranteed about this film: it will be an action spectacular and Tom Cruise will be involved in intricate and ever more outlandish stunts that can only be seen properly on the big screen. I am so hyped for seeing this, I’ve had the poster up in my office for the last four months!
We have a few really interesting documentaries on over August. The new Mark Cousins film My Name is Alfred Hitchcock takes us on a journey through the films of the great director and tells the story through his imagining of Hitchcock’s mind. Baato (Nepalese for path or road) is a beautifully shot insight into a remote Himalayan community and the creation of a road that will bring new challenges to those along its path.
Hipgnosis were a group of artists who created some of the most memorable album covers for some of the biggest bands of the ‘60s and ‘70s, like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Squaring the Circle is their story, featuring some big names and some great music. It’s a must see for true music fans.
Most excitingly this month we are doing a fun filled Summer of Cinema season featuring some of the most exciting blockbusters of the past 40 years - most of which will be screening from original 35mm prints. Featuring wronged men, killer sharks, battles at sea, wizards, elves, masks, a shining suitcase and a final mystery - it’s a season of fun on the cinema screen not to be missed.
And for those that need a blockbuster break in the middle there’s a beautiful Eric Rohmer summer drama starring Melvil Poupaud whose summer motto is ‘My job is just… beach!’.
